The machinery manufacturing industry comprises seven detailed sub-sectors, three of which produce machinery tailored for specific industries—known as specialized equipment: agricultural, construction, and mining machinery manufacturing; industrial machinery manufacturing; and machinery for commercial and service sectors.
The machines manufactured by the other four sectors are used across numerous industries; these are known as general-purpose machinery: specifically, ventilation, heating, air-conditioning, and commercial refrigeration equipment manufacturing; metalworking machinery production; engine, turbine, and power transmission equipment manufacturing; and other general-purpose machinery manufacturing. The following sections will primarily explore the nature of each of these mechanical manufacturing industries.
The nature of the machinery manufacturing industry
Metalworking machinery industry: Manufacturing machines and tools used for shaping, cutting, and forming metals. While the unique properties—such as strength and durability—that make metal an ideal component in countless products also make it challenging to work with. Specialized drills, grinders, molds, presses, and the accessories required for these machines are all produced within this industry. Metalworking machinery manufacturing accounts for a disproportionately large share of the overall mechanical engineering sector, largely because most of these facilities are small-scale operations.
Agricultural and construction machinery manufacturing industry: This sector is partly made up of larger organizations that produce both high-precision, large-scale machines and standard household equipment. Examples include leaf blowers and tillers for personal and commercial use, as well as bulldozers and backhoe loaders used in road and building construction.

Manufacturing industry for ventilation, heating, air conditioning, and commercial refrigeration equipment: This segment provides climate-control machinery for both residential and commercial buildings. In addition to heating and cooling systems, it also produces air purification devices—growing increasingly common in new constructions—as well as commercial refrigeration equipment primarily used for food storage.
Business and service machinery manufacturing industry: This sector produces machinery used by companies that provide services. For instance, firms in this niche market create commercial household appliances—such as laundry equipment found in self-service laundries and vacuum cleaners used in cleaning services. Other major components in this industry include non-electronic office equipment like vending machines, typewriters, and mail-sorting machines, as well as machinery designed for manufacturing optical lenses.
Industrial machinery manufacturing sector: This division produces machines used to transform raw materials into finished products. Materials processed include plastics, rubber, and glass. Additionally, the machinery manufactured in this field is also employed in printing and binding operations, as well as in the production of semiconductors and circuit boards.
Manufacturing of engines, turbines, and power transmission equipment: This sector encompasses a wide range of machinery that converts one type of energy or motion into another. Turbines harness the energy generated by the movement of steam, gas, water, or wind, converting it into mechanical power by rotating a drive shaft. Combined with gears, gearboxes, clutches, drive chains, and pulleys—also produced within this same market segment—turbines keep assembly lines and other industrial machinery running smoothly. Additionally, when connected to generators, turbines can produce electricity. The industry also includes the manufacturing of diesel and other internal combustion engines, along with their components, which are essential for powering portable generators, air compressors, pumps, and other equipment. Meanwhile, aircraft and automotive engines fall under the broader categories of aerospace products and parts manufacturing, as well as automotive and parts manufacturing, respectively, which are covered elsewhere.

Other general-purpose machinery manufacturing: Produces a wide range of machines primarily used in the manufacturing industry. These include pumps, compressors, welding and soldering equipment, as well as packaging machinery. The company also manufactures various material-handling devices, such as industrial trucks and tractors, bridge cranes and hoists, conveyors, and numerous types of hydraulic equipment—essential tools for manufacturing and other industries. Additionally, the company produces common mechanical items like scales, electric and manual power tools, as well as elevators, escalators, and more.
